Importance of shear strength of fiber mat in frangible structures
As per definition – The force that causes two contiguous parts of the same body to slide relative to each other in a direction parallel to their plane of contact is known as shear and the stress which is required to yield or fracture the material in the plane of material cross-section is known as shear strength.
As a matter of fact, the shear strength in composites is based majorly on the design and formulation. Thus, shear properties includes all – be it the fiber orientation, the type, the sequencing of layers, the volume of fibers used, the density and type of core materials and hence the shear strength is vital for both – the design of structural components and the selection of materials used for aviation safety.
Where fiber mats helps the frangible structures?
Irrespective of the fact that a frangible mechanism is specifically designed to withstand high wind loads, it stays highly sensitive to impact loads and tends to be directional in strength which directly means that it carries a high tension and bending however low shear which is quintessential otherwise. There comes the role and importance of fiber mat in frangible structures.
What is a fiber mat?
A non-woven fabric manufactured from the fibers and held together by a chemical binder is known as a fiber mat. It can also be called as a ply of short or long yarns which are either binded or stitched together.
Key feature set of different types of mats –
Chopped strand mats (CSMs)
– made up of randomly chopped glass fiber bundles and binding agent on a conveyor belt
– isotropic in-plane material properties like strength and permeability
– used in non-structural composite parts due to limited load carrying capability as an outer surface ply
Continuous filament random mats (CFRMs)
– made up of continuous filament yarn
– possess higher strength, fiber wash resistance & formability
– eliminates labor during the layup stage
Benefits of Fiber Mats for frangible structures –
– high permeability
– high porosity to resin flow
– good finish during pultrusion process
– boosts shear strength
All specified notions along with suitable tailoring methods of fiber mats out of available methods like Spray-up of chopped fibers and binder, Stamping of mats and fabrics in a two-sided mold, Braiding, Knitting, 3D weaving and Filtration of chopped fiber slurry on a perforated screen, contribute to its shear strength along with offering help in making the poles, masts and towers strong along with equipping them with high shear strength for breakage and distortion upon impact.
Conclusion
Since, SGS Frangible efficiently utilizes the knowledge and experience of the domain, thus outstands composite manufactures as one of the most regulated bodies of high quality and efficient manufacturer of frangible structures with fiber mats for boosting shear strength and environmental safety thereby leading as an innovative composites company.
