Frangible Approach poles – Case study Mumbai Airport, India

July 02, 2019 a SpiceJet plane from Jaipur overshot the runway while landing at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport in India amid heavy rain during night. All passengers were safely evacuated. After this incident, air traffic increased over the city airport, leading to flights go-arounds and diversions. Few planes in the landing array had to abort landing. The plane overshot the runway and skid into the approach light poles. Many poles were damaged during the accident. The poles were frangible in nature and were made to break during such event thus causing minimum damage to the plane structure.

After four days of shutdown, the main runway of opened for operations after removal of a SpiceJet Boeing 737-800 aircraft. In all, it took around 90 hours to lift the aircraft from the mud where it was stuck and bring it on to the tarmac to be pulled away. The aircraft was pulled out of the mud by the team using their Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (DARK) equipment.
