India’s Union Minister for  Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman has announced that 100 additional airports will be developed in the country by 2024. The new airports are expected to aid the UDAN Scheme. UDAN, or ‘Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik’, is India’s regional airport development scheme that aims to make air travel inexpensive and accessible for more Indian citizens.

When compared to the global average, air traffic in India has grown substantially. It is expected that the country’s air fleet number will increase from 600 to 1,200.

Airports Authority of India (AAI) manages a total of 125 Airports, which includes 11 International Airports, 81 Domestic Airports, 08 Customs Airports and 25 Civil Enclaves at Defence Airfields

top 5 Biggest and Busiest Airports in India with number of passengers handled in financial year 2020 are

  1. Indira Gandhi international airport in New Delhi – 67.3 Million
  2. Chattarpati Shivaji international airport in Mumbai, Maharashtra – 45.85 Million
  3. Kempegowda international airport in Bengaluru, Karnataka – 32.36 Million
  4. Chennai international airport in Chennai, Tamil Nadu – 22.27 Million
  5. Netaji Subash Chandra Bose international airport in Kolkata, West Bengal – 22.02 Million

Hyderabad Airport is at 6th position just a notch below Kolkata Airport in passenger number
